General Information
Elrod
Fellowships is not just about "jobs." The experience is intended to be
an opportunity to continue the education begun at Washington and Lee. We
seek to create a community among the Elrod Fellows, Host Organizations,
mentors, and other members of The Alumni Network.
WHY STUDENTS
PARTICIPATE
-
To explore a
public interest field
-
To contribute to
systemic change
-
To network in the D.C. and
Baltimore communities
-
To launch a
career in public interest work
-
To participate in
challenging hands-on experiences
THE PARTICULARS
-
All students and
recent graduates of W&L are eligible to apply to the Elrod Fellowship
-
Yearlong Fellowships usually run for 10-12 months following
graduation. The Host Organizations provide Fellows with a stipend and
health insurance
-
Fellows are responsible for their own housing arrangements,
however, housing assistance is available in some areas
-
Positions are in
Baltimore and Washington DC.
-
Each Fellow is assigned a local mentor - a W&L alumnus who serves
as an advisor, advocate, and friend
-
In most areas there will be a "welcome" and "farewell" gathering
for all the Fellows and their mentors
-
In all of our cluster
areas yearlong Fellows meet throughout the year to explore issues
relevant to their placements, as well as to the life of their host city.
This will happen through monthly speaker series, issues seminars, and/or
site visits
-
There will be
opportunities to meet Fellows and Alumni from TAN, the network of colleges
and universities that have a program similar to the Elrod Fellowship. These include: Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Bucknell,
Georgetown, Franklin and Marshall, and Stanford
